This session is perfect for anyone who wants to ‘have a go’ on the pottery wheel.
Session includes:
- how to prepare clay for throwing
- centring clay
- opening
- pinching and finishing
During this session each participant will have the chance to make several attempts at making pots.
The amount of clay to use is up to 3kg

During 5 weeks we teach:
- how to prepare the clay
- how to center the clay on the wheel
- how to make bowls
- how to make cylinders, cups and vases
- how to the trim your pots
The last session is the introduction to glazing.

A 1 and half an hour class for beginners with wheel experience/intermediate – throwing off the hump
Tutor: Yoko Romita
In this fun introductory course to Japanese-style throwing, you will learn how to produce pots more efficiently, advance your throwing techniques and use handmade Japanese-style tools. Yoko will teach you how to throw pots off the hump (a method widely used in Japan) and throw cups and bud vases using methods adapted from Japanese throwing techniques.

Off the hump – Japanese style
5 – Week Course

Tutor: Yoko
This course is for those who have finished a beginner’s course with us or at another studio and are looking to learn different techniques.
Our tutor Yoko will teach you how to throw pots off the hump (a method widely used in Japan and Asia) using Japanese tools such as the Gyubera and Egote.
This will help you to gain more confidence in your throwing skills. With Yoko, you’ll learn to throw more intricate shapes, forms and learn new techniques.
During the 5 weeks we teach:
- Wedging Techniques
- Throw Yunomi (cups) off the hump
- Throw Chawans (rice bowls) and small plates off the hump with Gyubera
- Throw Tokkuri (bottles) off the hump with Egote
- Trimming off hump and chucks
The last session is the introduction to glazing.
